Block Windows  Messenger Service (NetSend)

 

To disable Microsoft's Messenger Service, follow the directions for your computer's operating system.

Windows  2000:

1) Click START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL.

2) Double-click ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS > SERVICES.

3) Double-click MESSENGER, then click STOP.

4) Change STARTUP TYPE to DISABLE.

5) Click OK to save your changes.


Windows XP:

1) Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click MANAGE.

2) Click SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS > SERVICES.

3) Right-click MESSENGER and click the STOP button.

4) In the Messenger Properties window, change the STARTUP TYPE to DISABLE.

5) Click OK to save your changes.

6) Close the COMPUTER MANAGEMENT window.



Windows Vista / Windows 7:

1) Right-click COMPUTER, then click MANAGE.

2) Click SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS > SERVICES.

3) Right-click MESSENGER and click the STOP button.

4) In the Messenger Properties window, change the STARTUP TYPE to DISABLE.

5) Click OK to save your changes.

6) Close the COMPUTER MANAGEMENT window.


PLEASE NOTE: Some applications (SQL Job Scheduler, UPS systems, etc.) use Messenger alerts to notify you of critical system events. If you use such products, you should leave Messenger enabled and use a firewall/router to block popups.
