Defragmenting the Hard Drive


NOTE: Disk Defragmenter is NOT available in Safe Mode for Vista  users. To run Disk Defragmenter in Windows Normal Mode - CLICK HERE for instructions.



To help your system run more efficiently, we recommend you run the Disk Defragmenter in Windows  Safe Mode.

Safe Mode is a Windows troubleshooting mode that loads only the essential software needed to run your system.


When booted in the Safe Mode, the screen images will look different from what they usually do. This is normal.

To perform defrag in Safe Mode, please follow these steps:

We recommend you print these instructions before proceeding. They will not be available to you once you are in Safe Mode.

1) Restart your computer.

2) As your computer is restarting, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3) At the menu, choose either:

SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING:
Windows 2000, XP ONLY when connecting to Internet via DSL or cable modem choose Safe Mode with Networking.

SAFE MODE
ALL that use Dial-up

4) Click START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > DISK DEFRAGMENTER.

5) Select the "C:" Drive by clicking on it.

6) Click the DEFRAGMENT button.

When the disk defrag is done, restart your computer.
