Cookies can be used if a web site generates a unique ID number for each visitor and store the ID number on each user's machine using a cookie file.
When you browse the internet - and you re-visit a page with links - links that you have visited are usually purple. The links change colors because a cookie is being stored on your system - letting you know where you have already been on a page.
